The music review of:Paanch
After its run-in with the censor board last year, director Anurag Kashyap’s controversial thriller Paanch (starring Kay Kay Menon and Tejaswini Kolhapure) is finally due for release in August. If the soundtrack of the film is any indication, Paanch is a must see.
The album comprises eight songs, composed by Vishal Bharadwaj ( Maachis, Satya, Love Ke Liye Kuch Bhi Karega). Though the music is nothing short of refreshing, it may not find favour in cliche fed Bollywood junta.
Main khuda starts on a mellow note only to intensify into an electrifying crescendo. Singer KK pushes the vocals, though he tends to get carried away for brief moments.
Paka mat , featuring KK and Hariharan has comic lyrics by Abbas Tyrewala (Love Ke Liye Kuch Bhi Karegafame) with the two singers ribbing each other. With its jazzy feel and Hariharan splendid vocals, this one makes for a good listening.
A known name on the ad-jingle circuit--Dominique Manuel Cerejo croons Yeh kaisa hai shaher with much gusto. This light ditty with its swing beat is a tuneful foot-tapper.
The theme piece by Dominique again sees tabla beats blend with classical arias and jazz scats accompany panting vocal sounds as guitars strums. A good fusion mix of east meets west.
Ustad Sultan Khan's rendition of Ankhiyan chipki is a treat for fans of classical music.
Asha Bhosle sounds pale in comparison to the zestful voices of Dominique and Sunidhi Chauhan in Jism hai.
Chauhan appears in another version of Main khuda, this time with K J Singh as arranger. Deva Sen Gupta’s rich baritone finds soul in Tapasa lingering memory.
The songs are mostly situational based lending a strong narrative element. All in all,Paanch is worth its while.
